A bottomless (or naked) portafilter has no spouts — espresso flows directly from the filter basket, visible from below. This makes channeling and uneven extraction immediately visible: spurts, splits, or drips down the sides all signal problems with your distribution or tamping. Fix the cause and your extraction improves. Once your technique is dialled in, some baristas keep it as a permanent setup for unrestricted flow.

With a naked portafilter you see it happening in real time. Improve your distribution or tamping, and the flow becomes clean and even. Your existing basket will work. However, a naked portafilter exposes every flaw in your puck preparation. For best results, pair it with a precision basket (uniformly perforated for even flow) and use a WDT tool or distributor for level grounds before tamping. Good technique matters more than the basket choice.

Knock out the puck immediately after the shot, then rinse under hot water. Brush the basket clean after each session. Soak weekly in a portafilter cleaning solution (Cafiza or equivalent) to dissolve coffee oils. The open design actually makes cleaning easier — no spout channels to trap grounds.
