Frequently asked

What size tamper do I need?

The most common sizes are 58mm (standard for home espresso, including HiBREW H10A and H10 Plus) and 51mm (compact machines). Measure your portafilter basket's inner diameter — it's usually stamped on the side. When in doubt, 58mm fits the majority of home espresso machines sold in India.

What's the difference between a spring tamper and a regular tamper?

A regular tamper requires you to judge pressure by feel — inconsistency is common and affects extraction. A spring tamper has a calibrated mechanism (spring, impact, or click) that releases at a set pressure, so every tamp delivers the same force. For consistent espresso, a spring tamper removes one variable entirely.

What is constant pressure tamping, and why does it matter?

Constant pressure tamping means applying the same force to your coffee puck every time — typically 20–30lbs. Inconsistent pressure creates uneven density, causing water to find gaps in the puck (channeling). Channeling produces sour, bitter, or weak espresso. A calibrated tamper eliminates this variable.

Does tamper base shape — flat vs ripple — matter?

For most home espresso, flat is correct. Flat bases create an even, level puck for uniform water distribution. Ripple or wavy bases are a niche preference — the evidence for any consistent advantage is mixed. If your technique is dialled in, flat is the standard choice.

How do I clean my tamper?

Wipe the base clean after each use. For a deeper clean, wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately — don't leave stainless steel wet for long. For spring or impact mechanisms, avoid submerging in water. A quick wipe after every session is all it needs for long-term maintenance.

Do I need a tamping mat?

A tamping mat protects your counter and stabilises the portafilter during tamping. It's not strictly necessary, but it prevents scratching and gives you a consistent tamping angle. Silicone mats are inexpensive and useful if you're tamping on a hard surface.
