What's the difference between a hand grinder and an electric grinder?

A hand grinder uses manual cranking to grind beans, giving you full control over grind speed and consistency. They're quieter, more portable, and often produce less heat — which preserves coffee flavour. Electric grinders are faster and more convenient for daily use, but a good hand grinder often outperforms electric grinders at 2–3× the price.

Which grind size should I use for my brew method?

Espresso needs a fine grind, pour-over and drip need medium, French press needs coarse. Most hand grinders come with a reference guide, and you can fine-tune from there by taste.

How do I clean my hand grinder?

Disassemble the burr chamber, brush out retained grounds with the included brush, and wipe the body. Deep clean monthly with a dry brush. Never use water on the burrs — it causes rust and damages the coating.

How long does it take to grind a dose by hand?

For a typical 15–18g espresso dose, expect 30–60 seconds depending on grind size and burr quality. Pour-over grinds faster (coarser setting) — usually under 30 seconds.

Can I use a hand grinder for espresso?

It depends on the grinder. Models with 48mm+ burrs and fine adjustment steps (like the 1Zpresso J-Ultra or KINGrinder K6) handle espresso well. Entry-level grinders with smaller burrs are better suited to pour-over and French press.

What does 'external adjustment' mean?

External adjustment means you turn a dial on the outside of the grinder to change grind size — no disassembly needed. Internal adjustment requires removing parts to access the adjustment ring. External is faster, more convenient, and lets you switch between brew methods without hassle.

good for both espresso and for pourover. little effort required to grind. key challenge is to figure out the grind setting that works for your beans and machine best.

Workflow update

Was looking to buy this grinder for a long time, finally sold my C2 and pulled the trigger on R3. Had some trouble because of the courier company the guys at Fix coffee were super helpful in sorting out the issue with the courier company. As far as the product is concerned it is very well built, feels very premium in hand and the speed and micro adjustments is definitely a much needed upgrade over my C2.
Thanks again team Fix coffee for making these equipments available in India for a very competitive price.

R3 is a bomb grinder

I was skeptical spending 10k on a manual grinder. But i have to say this one is really good one. Using it for both pour over as well as espresso. It take some time and effort to get your desired click setting. But yeah the fun it is to play with is good.

One small down side is there is no counter for rotations. But that only matters if you experiment a lot.

Coming from few grinders like timemore C3S. This is something special.

It gives tough competition to kingrinder k6. Which is way more expensive in india right now.

Best precision grinder

After a lot of research, I finally bought MHW-3bomber R3 grinder and I am so glad I took this decision. It’s very fast and precise. I use it for array of different brews. The outer dial for adjustment is the best. Long handle is very comfortable. Another added bonus is the powerful magnetic quick release mechanism. I would highly recommend every one who is a serious amateur coffee enthusiast.
